The Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger feels that Liverpool outplayed his team in the first half, but after failing to kill the game off, some “fear” crept int their game, while Arsenal had nothing to lose!
“I believe first of all Liverpool played very well in that period and we played with a handbrake because of our fear.” Wenger said.
“That fear was of not winning the big games because we lost against Chelsea and Manchester United. You could see that we brought that into the game.
“Once we had nothing to lose in the second half we controlled the game and we were a bit lucky with the first goal and the fear was in Liverpool’s camp in the second half. Then we scored an outstanding second goal and from then on Liverpool’s pace dropped in the second half and I believe we were not under threat for the whole 45 minutes.”
“I believe that Liverpool are a good side who when they find their confidence they can beat anybody in the league. For us with the results of yesterday, mathematically it gets us into a good position with a game in hand.
“I believe at the moment Liverpool has not the confidence they had last year. It’s difficult to play for 90 minutes at the pace they played in the first half.
“I believe as well that because they didn’t score the second goal, at half time they had time to get the doubt in their mind.
“You think that the game is not won and it breaks your flow a little bit and you come out in the second half and you are not exactly the same.”
“Mentally for us it was a massive game today. We knew that with what happened yesterday it was needed to win the game. We knew that before the game started and we did it so that’s something positive. Now it’s down to consistency.
“I have said for a long time now the team to win this League will be the team capable of being really consistent.
“Nobody has been yet. There is a long way to go.”
There certainly is, and you have to agree that Wenger was right when he said that all the top teams would drop points this season. Something he repeated again yesterday.
“I always said that Chelsea would drop points after our game and I believe they have and they will. Everybody will drop points because there are so many good teams in this league.
“Now Liverpool have Gerrard back, Torres back, Aquilani back, I tell you many will drop points here. They played at a level in the first half that was impressive.”
