Wenger thankful for Ferguson intervention

Arsène Wenger has expressed his gratitude to Sir Alex Ferguson after he moved to stop obscene chanting at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United manager has written an open letter to his club's fans in which he urged them to stop directing abuse towards his Arsenal counterpart.

Wenger has been subjected to vile chants from some opposition fans for a number of years and the matter came to a head when he was abused after being sent to the stands during Arsenal's defeat at Old Trafford in August.

The Frenchman rarely comments on the treatment he receives but thanked Ferguson for his intervention when the issue cropped up at his pre-match press conference.

"I am grateful for that," said Wenger. "I don't think I deserve this [the abuse]. I don't know what I have done to get these obscene chants at Manchester United or anywhere else.

"Yes [it is good that Ferguson has intervened]. Maybe it is because of my persistence here. I don't know what to say, I have never bothered about that frankly."
