The Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas helped himself to a couple of goals in last night’s 4-1 win over AZ Alkmaar to virtually guarantee Arsenal top spot in the group, but refuses to get carried away with the performance.
In fact he even refused to celebrate winning the group as it is still possible to be overtaken by Olympiakos or Standard Liege if Arsenal somehow manage to lose their last two games.
“It is not definite so we’ll have to keep working until the end,” Fabregas said.
“Even if we had qualified today we would have wanted to win and have gone for the six points. That is our mentality.”
“It’s just the beginning of the season, nothing is done, we want to keep going until the end,”.
“I’ll feel it is something special when we win something.
“We want to win and if we win something at the end we will say we had a good year.
“We can still do better so we’ll try to improve in the next few games.”
The Spaniard seems more determined than usual to get his hands on some silverware this season to prove the doubters wrong, but if he keeps playing in this majestic form the team will be very hard to overcome.
Andrei Arshavin also played brilliantly, providing assists for three of the goals, including one for the returning one from Sami Nasri and one for Diaby.
Nasri played the full 90 minutes and even Thomas Rosicky got on the pitch for the last 15 minutes.
Wenger singled out Arshavin for special praise after the game.
“He [Arshavin] was outstanding. Every time he gave the ball in the fraction of the second you wanted him to give it and that is top, top quality.
“Of course, our policy is to produce our own players and add players of special quality and he is a good example of that.
“I am not scared to spend money but what we want is to buy the players who have the needed quality to strengthen the team.”
