I am not lazy. This season I feel I am ready to step up a level - Abou Diaby

It’s not the first time Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby was compared to ex-captain Patrick Vieira although on the pitch, the 23-year old is yet to show he can be as good as his fellow Frenchman.

A regular starter this season with the Gunners, Diaby has been often criticised for being lazy on the pitch, failing to help his midfield colleagues when under pressure.

But speaking on this, on Vieira and on his future, the Frenchman told the Daily Mail:

[Vieira] inspired me when I was a kid growing up. I would watch him playing for Arsenal, playing for France, and dream of one day playing for Arsenal too.

All the kids I grew up with did. We would watch the way they played football under Arsene Wenger, with some great French players like Vieira, Henry, Petit and Pires.

I think maybe I am more attack-minded, a more technical player. Vieira is much more aggressive. He makes more of a physical impact in a game, in midfield. He is amazing. I don’t think I have this quality yet. I think I can develop in that way but he is much stronger.

But I accept that I do need to be more aggressive and more physical. I can tackle. I think I can, anyway. I think I have the ability to have more of a physical impact in the middle. I am not lazy. People think, because of the way I run, that I am not working as hard as I could be, but trust me I am.

I am ambitious. I love football. It is my passion and I want to be a top-class player, the best I can possibly be.
