The uproar over Fran Merida’s contract looks set to continue today, as his agent Joseba Diaz has now revealed that he is on his way to London to discuss a new contract with Arsenal.
Yesterday Diaz seemed to indicate that Merida was definitely going to move to Atletico Madrid when he said: “We only have an offer from Arsenal but Fran Merida has an illness, for want of a better word, and that is Atletico Madrid and you can’t do anything about that,”
But maybe Merida has had a word with him, and told him to stop making announcements on his behalf, because today’s word from Diaz said simply: “I am coming to London to discuss a new two-year deal with Arsenal with whom we have a very warm relationship.”
The only problem with that statement is that Merida has refused to sign a FIVE-YEAR contract, and if Arsenal agree a TWO-YEAR contract, as Diaz suggests, then Arsenal will probably still have to sell him after one more season.
I could see this as being a reasonable compromise, or Arsenal will risk losing him on a free transfer this summer. As he is only a teenager, he has many years left to move to Spain, and he would benefit much more by staying under Arsene Wenger’s tutelage for another 18 months, and then consider his future.
