Arsenal midfielder Fran Merida has admitted it was good to hear reports of interest from Atletico Madrid.
The highly-rated Spaniard is contracted to the Gunners until the end of this season and recently spoke of his determination to make an impact at Emirates Stadium.

However, he has yet to decide whether to accept the offer of a new long-term deal and speculation suggests he could be tempted to return to his homeland.

Having impressed during a loan spell with Real Sociedad in 2008, there are rumours that Atletico Madrid are now keen to bring in Merida.

"Atletico are one of the best clubs in Spain and a Champions League club and I am really pleased by the interest in me," the teenager told AS.

"This is news to make me content but I have a deal signed with Arsenal until June 2010 and I still have not decided my future."

"I have not accepted the offer from Arsenal for five more seasons but this does not change things. I want to study the situation calmly and decide what is best."

Merida is regarded as an exciting prospect for the future and agent Joseba Diaz insists he has attracted a lot of attention, although a decision on his future will not be made until talks with Arsenal have been held.

"Many clubs have called me about this subject but we want to speak with Arsenal and then decide," said Diaz.
